For nearly 2 years, Allied prisoners at the Cabanatuan Prisoner of War camp on the Philippine island of Luzon barely managed to survive their brutal captivity at the hands of the Japanese. By January 1944, these last survivors of the notorious "Bataan Death March" were on the verge of giving up hope of ever knowing freedom again. At that very moment, however, they were being carefully watched through the scope of a Springfield M1903 sniper rifle belonging to a Ranger of the U.S. 6th Ranger Battalion. With a single crack from the sniper's rifle, the most daring and successful POW rescue of the war commenced. Exploding out of the jungle, the joint U.S. Ranger and Philippine rescue force tore into the Japanese like a tornado. Within 30 minutes the raid ended with the rescuers melting back into the jungle with over 500 freed Allied prisoners. "Rangers Leadthe Way!"
